The rise of the single family rental

In this episode of The Distribution by Juniper Square, Brandon Sedloff sat down with David Howard, CEO of the National Rental Home Council (NRHC). Founded in 2014, NRHC is a non-partisan organization dedicated to advocating on behalf of the single-family rental (SFR) industry. As CEO, David is responsible for managing all aspects of NRHC’s operating priorities and directing the organization’s legislative and public policy objectives.

During their conversation, the two discussed:

  • How SFR compares to traditional multifamily properties

  • Trends in the SFR market, including the difference between scattered sites and build-to-rent

  • The affordability crisis and other trends driving demand for single-family rentals

One of the things I love about build-to-rent is it brings new housing online. Yes, it's rental housing, but it's housing nonetheless. And that's the crux of the issue. We need more housing. The way that you get more housing is you encourage investment and development.
